book review

I am doing a book review on skulduggery pleasant: playing with fire, by Derek landy. The genre is children's/fantasy literature.

When we start off, Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain were capturing villains for the grand mage of Ireland, Thurid Guild. The latest capture is Scapegrace, and dangerous criminal Baron Vengeous has escaped from prison to find Lord Vile's armor to awaken the Grotesquery to invite the Faceless Ones (evil gods who want to kill all humans) back into this reality. He loses to Skulduggery and goes after China Sorrows, who repels him. Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain intervene, and scare off Baron Vengeous. Later, the detectives go with the aforementioned Scapegrace to his old pub, to find an old man called The Torment, who knows where the Grotesquery and Lord Vile’s armor is. They have a fight with the local sorcerers where Skulduggery ends up beating up a giant, a lightning-thrower, and someone who can turn his hands into hammers. When they find The Torment, he demands that Valkyrie be killed before he reveals his information. They summon and shoot her reflection. they later find out that Baron Vengeous already has the Grotesquery. Then they return the reflection to the mirror and Valkyrie gets kidnapped.

Baron Vengeous uses the power of Vile’s Armor to infuse the Grotesquery with the blood of the ancients, bringing it back to life. She then gets rescued by Skulduggery and wakes up in a hospital. However, the Grotesquery has already absorbed enough power and blood to come back to life, kill the doctors assistants, and break out. Valkyrie reluctantly goes to a family reunion to distract the bad guys, and succeeds in drawing out the vampire Dusk and The Torment, who she beats up with the help of Skulduggery and Tanith Low, who is basically a ninja with magic. Meanwhile, China and her bodyguards are beaten up by Baron Vengeous, before being taken to the villain's base and seeing her guards killed. Skulduggery, Valkyrie, Tanith, Mister Bliss and some cleavers go to attack the Grotesquery and are almost killed. Mister Bliss is incapacitated and the cleavers attack and almost overpower the Grotesquery, but Vengeous comes with China hostage and beats up everyone. The heroes then trick Vengeous into letting them go, and they get his armor off and Vengeous crawls toward the Grotesquery, but it snaps his neck. The Torment then comes and fights the Grotesquery, and Valkyrie stabs it in the heart, killing it.

I think that this book was really good at building up strong villains, then have them die in a very convincing way. A good example of this is Baron Vengeous. When he starts out, he can barely hold his own. Then he gains massive power, but is stripped of it because of his mistakes. One thing they could have improved on is establishing clear boundaries for things. An example of this is the reflection. They make us believe that it cannot be summoned through another surface, and that it cannot be killed. Both of these things are done.

I think that the author was trying to convey the message of overcoming boundaries and the consequences of villainy. I think the point of writing the book was to get more story to the popular original book. I think the author was trying to communicate that there was a big evil waiting to be unleashed in the next story. I think that that message was good for increased sales of the third book, which is a very good idea.

I would recommend this book to people who like magic and action, because that is what is here in this book. I would recommend this book to Joseph Spillane and people who liked Harry Potter.
